I am getting frequent Twunk_16 error messages when I try to use scanner or some software. My hardware is AMD 1.2gig, 256MB RAM, 30gig HD. BIOS is about 2 years old. Windows 98SSE

After trying everything else, I reformatted my HD and started fresh. I reinstalled WIN 98SE from my CD and got all updates from MS. Then I reinstalled all hardware and software from CD and went to web sites to download latest drivers etc.
Still getting Twunk_16 errors. If I click IGNORE, software and hardware work.

What's the exact text of the error messages, incl. Details?

Ski:

The message appears on a white background and says:
Twunk_16

An error has occurred in your program. To keep working anyway, click Ignore and save your work in a new file. To quit this program, choose Close. You will lose information you entered since your last Save.

Then it has the Close and Ignore buttons.

If I press Close it tells me the program has performed an illegal function and produces this message:

TWUNK_16 caused a general protection fault
in module TWUNK_16.EXE at 0001:00007511.

I just tried Presto Pagemanager and it worked OK and Vista Scan for my scanner worked OK. I did get the above message from Adobe Photoshop Elements.

Thanks,
Scott Harris

Uninstall the scanner software, then delete files TWAIN.DLL, TWAIN_32.DLL, TWUNK_16.EXE, TWUNK_32.EXE, and folders TWAIN, and TWAIN_32, and reinstall the software, and see if that works.

Sounds like a UMAX SCSI scanner. There have been problems with the drivers for these devices, most often on systems with USB ports. Although the symptoms are not exactly the same as the for the problems I have worked on you might want to update the drivers anyways. Pay particular attention to UMAXIS11.386.

Good luck...wee

Ski & WeeGeordie:

I tried Ski's approach and uninstalled the Umax Astra 1220P scanner, deleted the folders and files noted. Then I reinstalled the software and updates to the software I downloaded from UMAX. As soon as I reinstalled all this, I tried to run PhotoShop Elements 1 and got the same Twunk_16 error message.

Then I uninstalled the scanner software again, deleted the files etc. and then tried to load PhotoShop Elements and it loaded with no error messages.

It seems that the scanner software is to blame and I have the latest version, (which was about a 6mb download).

Any suggestions? (other than scrapping the scanner and buying an Epson)

Thanks, I think you're both onto the trail of the culprit.

Thanks,

Scott

Scottharris I had a look on the Adobe web site forum and found that UMAX scanners were a bone of contention, however, one reply indicated that Vuesan was a better piece of scanning software that would bridge the gap between PSE and UMAX.

There is a free 2mb windows download at:-

It might be worth a try, best of luck!

Brian:

I tried downloading vuesan and I still get the twunk_16 error. Thanks for giving it a shot.

Most programs that deal with scanners allow you to select the twain drivers you wish to use. It sounds like the Adobe Photoshop program is accessing the 16bit TWAIN driver (assumed because TWUNK_16 is what is dying). It needs the 32bit driver.

In VistaScan and Pagemanager, Adobe,...etc:
Look for a select TWAIN option and make sure the TWAIN32 driver is applied. It might be named differently than TWAIN32, but should be differentiated easily from the 16bit version.

As I recall, when installing my UMAX into a WIN2k environment there was a very particular order of events during installation/ upgrade to make the system "see" the proper 32bit twain (to make it selectable in "Select TWAIN"). the process is on the UMAX site- I will see if i can find it too and post it's link here if i do.
