Im new to Exchange, can someone explain cached mode in detail please.

And Im running an offline defrag with eseutil on a 20GB priv1. How long does this take?!?! Its been running for an hour and a half and its only at 10%!

cached mode reduces bandwidth utilization by storing a local copy of the mailbox on the client workstation. It also allows access to that local copy if the connection to the Exchange server is lost.

Sit back - it's going to be a while. Why was an offline defrag needed? That's rare.

Because the priv1.edb file is over 20GB and they havent done a defrag in about 3 years.

offline defrag removes white space
online reorganises data pages each night.

The fact they haven't done a defrag in three years really means nothing. What do the 1221 events say in the application event log?

ok, what I meant (by inference) is that offline defrag is not really required except if you remove a load of users or emails.

We removed about 12 users last week. I ran eseutil and it generated an error at 98%. I wasnt aware that the default online defrag time is 1-5. The previous admin didnt know what he was doing and Im very new to Exchange so any tips are greatly appreciated.

Don't cancel the defrag. If you do you will be left with the temp files in the Bin folder and they can take up alot of space.

I didnt cancel it, it ended on its own. I took a screenshot of the error but now I cant find it... I remember the error saying -1108. When I get to work later, Ill check event logs.

I wouldn't do an offline defrag just because I'd deleted 12 mailboxes. Just live with the white space in your store, it doesn't do any harm.

And it'll get reused anyway.

Anything that takes your stores offline should be avoided unless there's a serious issue that needs to be immediately addressed.
