You can bridge two ext's on a digital phone, or put in a 2 line analog phone. If you bridge a digital phone, they will be able to tell which line is ringing and that person assigned to it can answer....
If you are using analog phones there is a feature that was introduced in V9: Station used as Virtual Extension, which allows you to assign multiple extensions to a single set.
If you are using digital sets, you can use TTI/PSA to swap extensions in and out, using Feature Access Codes (FAC).
Another possibility is to set up a 6408D set (We only use the 64xx series of phone sets). The first 3 buttons are call appearances of the first line. Then set up the next three buttons as bridged appearances of the second line.
I'd then use button 7 for the message waiting light for the 2nd line.
Button 8 can be used for whatever else you'd like, such as a headset button.
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

The way I do this is program a dxport extension and assign voice mail etc to this phantom extension, Then place it as a bridged extension on the phone with an aut-msg-wt for the secondary extension. The 1st user will use the primary ext of the phone and the second user will use the bridged dxport ext. Their msgs will light up on the aut-msg wt light and not on the envelope of the main extenson. We usually use a 6416D+ so on the right hand side the secondary user can program what buttons they need. Hope this helps.

There are some good ideas here. But they will vary depending on how you want to do this.
What version software are you at?
What type phones do you want to use?
forgive me but i'm not 100% positive what release we are on (i am pretty sure its release 9)
i tried doing the three bridged apearance button on a 64x series phones but we are using the call center basic package and i don't know if there is a way to set up the bridged extension to be able to log into the splits in that set up. for the time being i just tossed two phones on the desk but i'm already getting complaints of people answering the wrong phone and running out of desk space.
An easy way to determine what release you are running is to type in "newterm" on the command line. This will tell you what version you are at. If you find any mistakes, please consider that they are there for a purpose. And everyone needs a purpose.
Hope this helps, Mikey.
On my version of software I cant have a agent login with hardware being assigned and a phone being plugged into it. An x ported number will not login. You could set up a phone with hardware assigned, a phone plugged in and make bridged appearances of it on the phone you want to take calls. Use the login code, auto-in code, and log out code on the bridged appearances and it will work. I am not sure that you dont already have the best solution in place though. It seems that you need calls answered and 2 people sharing the same phone is not the best answer. If you find any mistakes, please consider that they are there for a purpose. And everyone needs a purpose.
Hope this helps, Mikey.
The best solution for this is probably to have Agent logins. You do not use X-Ported stations as agents! You need to use a number (probably a DID) and add the agent using that number. The station itself should probably be a NON-DID. You can even set the agent up to use a coverage path that will allow it to go to voice mail. The station can be called regardless of who is logged into it using the NON-DID for internal calls. When the agent is logged in the calls will be placed out using the Agent. I work in a CALL-CENTER environment with 185 nurses sharing 65 cubes. The stations are all named by CUBE 1-65. The agent will log into any cube that they choose and then have their name attached to the phone they are attached to.
COMMANDS TO USE:
add agent-loginID (DID EXT)
add agent-loginID (DID EXT)
add station (NON-DID EXT)
