My boss wants to know if we can do something that I'm pretty sure we can't, but I don't know enough to say for sure. He's wondering if we can make the phone that is the reception phone (takes all the incoming calls) use one ring type for incoming calls, and a second ring type for internal calls (if someone dials the extension 221). I know how to change the phones ring type, but I don't think I can give it two. Anyone know a way?

Your boss should already be able to distinguish incoming external calls from incoming internal calls: external calls have a single ring while internal calls have a double ring. Transferred calls have the same double ring as internal calls, though.

If you are running software 6.0 or later, you can assign a specific ring type to lines and hunt groups. This feature is called Distinctive Ring Pattern. I believe it is what you are looking for.

So since I have MICS 4.1 I can't do that (I think that's the software your talking about). As for the double ring vs single, I'm never up front to hear the phone ring when people call but I'll talk to the people up there and see if that is something they have/can notice and if it will be enough. Thanks for the help.

Right.

MICS 4.1 doesn't have the Distinctive Ring Pattern feature.

MICS 1.0 through 7.1 have a single ring for external calls and a double ring for internal calls.

You may also want to ask your boss which problem he is trying to solve. For example, if the reception phone user isn't sure how to answer, you could also teach him/her to recognize the messages on the display (they show whether an external call or an internal call is ringing) and explain him/her the meaning of the indicators (they show whether the call is coming in on an external line or on an internal line).
