I was just in another part of the building when a supervisor motioned for me to come over ... real secretive like.

The supervisor has an employee who's last day is tomorrow. The employee resigned last week and is going back to school. The employee has been working half days this week. The supervisor wanted me to come back in about a hour (1p - after the employee is gone) and log into the computer and leave it on, so she can come behind me and look in the employee's email.

I told her, its no secret password. Our IDs follow the same pattern for ID and passwords and that she could just do it herself.

I understand monitoring and all, and making employees don't abuse the system. But the has already resigned, had her exit interview and sign all the paperwork. There's a party for her tomorrow.

At this point, the supervisors motives seem shady to me.

What do you think?

I disagree... depending upon the position, it could be critical to view a departing employees email in order to insure a smooth transition of work. As a supervisor, it is his/her duty to manage the business and business contacts. If the person was a sales person, for example, I would certainly want to know if they have been attmepting to acquire business from me. The supervisor should assume ownership of the email account in any event after the employee departs.

Not to mention, using a company email (depending upon if there is a formal policy), is considered company property. A company representative may, in that case, at wil review/monitor the email accounts of employees.

It is a little strange however that the supervisor would ask you to perform this task. It is there job imho. I would not be concerned though.

The tone I tried to convey was that she's being very secretive. Supervisors get their departing employee's emails all the time. This employee was a basic clerk, no power or authority not much dealing with the outside.

The supervisor literally cowling in the corner and whispering "I wanna see whats in her emai" is what makes it interesting. Not the act itself. Other supervisors just say, out loud, no secret, so and so is leaving tomorrow give me access to their mail. But the fact she was trying to be very secretive, tells me even SHE thinks she up to something.

Actually i dont care.

If it was a valid request it would have gone through a proper request procedure, if one exists. I don't disgree that managment has a right to accessing her email for a legit reason but just to poke around is uncalled for.

We have to sign papers saying that email and internet use is for company business only, and we could get fired for using it otherwise. Without knowing more about the supervisor, (It does sound shady), keep this in mind. We had a pair of people who were emailing sexually explicit notes back and forth between each other within the same building. They were smart enough to delete the emails, but she, (Not a slam against women, just the way it worked out), was not smart enough to delete them from the deleted items. They were both fired when there boss found them. Is it possible that the supervisor thinks it may be something like this and doesn't want to embaress her? Just a thought.

Is it possible that the supervisor wants to check that certain emails have been properly deleted?

It sounds to me like it may be something similar

She's NOT very computer literate. This is a very paperless company ... so its not uncommon for supervisors to have access to individuals emails what they leave to get information.

And she didn't say "I need to find some files" or "I wanna keep her email in case I need something." But she's whsipering and being secretive.

I think it cause she's kind of control and relatively new at supervising people. Once when she first got employees she wanted me to hook up exchange so that every email they got, she got also and she had the passwords but didnt want them to know that.

No, what I mean is, if she's a supervisor and is supposed to have the authority to log onto this system and check the email, why is she asking you to log on and walk away from the machine?

If she has the authority (business-wise and network-security-wise), why doesn't she log onto the system?

If possible, get away from her. She doesn't sound like she's going to be any good for you. Good luck.

Sleipnir214 and Glen Johnson.

You're both right....

A another twist.

I told her to just sit down and go into it. She's the boss she can do this. Since the employee is leaving, no one would think anything of it.

Well, she tried to get into it, but I think the girl changed here password. So... she want me to crack it. I told here I can reset it, but I can't crack it. And if I reset set it the girl will know cause her password wont work. So she says "No, I don't want her to know I've been in it."

hmmm
