Tweak GeForce MX400 64meg???

Anyone know how to tweak this thing? anything I do makes the fps even lower.. and it seems to be stuck at 60fps.. wont go higher.. (counter-strike) now my old voodoo3 hit 85fps at max res..

this isent possible.. someone plz help :)

Try putting NVMAX in a google search.
This is a really good Nvidia G/force tweak tool.
Have you enabled 4X AGP in the bios? (if it is AGP of course)
There are usually other tweaks in bios for your graphics
card, study the bios in your motherboard manual.
One last question, how old is your motherboard?
Because some newer graphics cards actually run very slowly with some older motherboard chipsets, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if your older Voodoo 3 was quicker on a dated motherboard.
I have a friend who had exactly the same experience going from a Voodoo3 to a G/Force 2 mx400 on an old Ali chipset AT motherboard, just over 1000 points in 3D benchmark 2000 when I know an MX400 can reach nearly 4000 points when used on a newer Via KT266a motherboard. Paparazi has some very good points. To give a little more info, check your BIOS for an AGP Aperture size setting. There is some disaggreement out there as to what is best for you, but basically follow this.
-Set it very low, play the game(s). No lockups, kick it up
-Keep going. You should be able to get video better and better until the point that it horks in a game.
-Kick the setting down one. See if that helps.

ok well.. I tuned my bios to what u guys suggested and nothing..

I know that counter-strike has a fps_max setting .. but its set to 100.. but it seem like the game is "trying" to go higher than 60.. but something is holding it back. Like some sort of a cap?!?!

and as for NVMAX... Ive tried numerus progies like this one to try to bring the fps up but whatever I seem to do actually makes it worse.. I dont seem to know what the proper setting should be. Someone once told me that my "vsync" is off or something.. I really dont know anything about any of this.

kinda sad.. lol

Are you using the drivers that shipped with the card, or did you download detonator drivers from Nvidia.com? That may help, I have seen many systems that kicked up after that.

No, Im using the Detonator Drivers.

The MSI drivers are pathetic. They cause a lot of problems.. I was forced to format in the past because of them.. but lets not get into that. :) but either way, all they are is basically a tweaking program they still make you do download the current detonator drivers..

So I was still stuck at 60 fps with them also.

Hrmmmmmm..... All that I can think of is all of the usual (DX version, etc). Do other games also cap out, or did they improve after puting in new card?

Someone just told me to go find nVidia Refresh Rate Fix because its the vertical sync problem..

well.. nVidia Refresh Rate Fix was for old drivers.. no new fix..

so stressfull.

Hi ya Spidy,

I don't think it's the card: it's the game. I do have the card, but not the game. I've read elsewhere of a 'glitch' that even GF4's can't reach the 100fps.

On 'tweeking' the card: "Riva Tuner" While there: download "Detonator Destroyer" & the '28.32 WHQL certified nVidia Driver' for your card & OS. Follow the instructions for removing the 'old' drivers: in "Det Destroyer" & re-boot after "DD". Then unzip & install '28.32'. Then "Riva".

I've used "Riva Tuner" to oc to 215/380 from stock 200/334 & have seen increases in FPS of 15-20%. I *DO* have an extra cooling fan tho'. VERY important. I can suggest some settings in Riva [you oc at your own risk tho'] that I have enabled/use. Start low & don't 'cook' the card, no matter what!

An *excellent* tool is "Fresh Diagnose" it's free & full of system info. You can benchmark the video adapter in 2-3min & the settings you try in Riva can be verified by doing so between settings. Tells ya if cranking the card is truly helping & when you've gone too far. <wink>

Make sure you have DirectX 8.1 installed also.

All this talk of 100 plus frame rates does beg an obvious question:
Why is everyone so bothered if the human eye cannot detect any differance over 75fps? Oh yes! EGO! I forgot!
Lets just remember any frames rates faster than the monitors set refresh rate are wasted anyway.
Surely detail and image quality are more important now that cards have got so fast and have reached and surpassed the eyes ability to see image judder.

In counter-strike, it is easy for the experienced player to see the difference between 100fps and 80fps. It has to do with way the game is made. When framerates are not stable the game gets choppy and that affects things such as how quickly and smoothly your crosshair returns to its first position and how smooth full-auto firing is. In counter-strike, framerate is life. If you're thinking about posting some boring story about your noobie friend who "owns" with 40 fps, don't bother. I play against the best of the best in the CS world and my team is #1 in our CAL-Main division. We will probably take the finals and move into the invite division. I've gotten this far with 40fps. My new pc gets constant 100, it's like night and day, a whole new game.

Framerate is life!! Mad onions logo?
Oh yes! of course you are correct to a point! but you missed mine!
It's a technical thing and you have to understand refresh rates to know that any FPS your graphics card gives you over the monitor's REFRESH RATE are waisted.
Put simply: If your monitor refresh rate is set to say 70htz the image is being replaced 70 times a second so it just don't matter that your GF4 4600Ti or similar is displaying 180fps at that point.
The human eye cannot detect anything quicker than 65fps anyway! so as long as your card can push out this minimum 65fps figure everything will appear perfectly smooth.
Now that we have cards that can easily reach and surpass this minimum FPS figure all the time surely QUALITY and DETAIL IS LIFE! should be the new logo.
I surpose to your defence that there are always going to be new games coming out that will knock the framerates down of the newest graphics card releases but I just wanted to put a differant perspective on this obsession with pure framerate and point out some peoples misconceptions on the subject.
Detail and quality, WAY TO GO! Martin Please let members know if there advice has helped any.
