Hello,

Using a Toshiba Satellite 200CDS, W98SE, and a Xircom 56T Credit Card Modem. The modem works, but I am not hearing any sound through the computer speakers. In the ModemProperties box, I have set Speaker Volume on high, and in the Connection-Advanced box, I have set M1 in the Extra Settings field (also tried M2, M1L2, etc.).

What else can I try?

John

The modem log:

Is there an audio cable connector on your modem? If so, do you have a cable going from your modem to your sound card?

Thanks, Butch, for your reply.

I don't think there is an audio cable involved. This is a card modem that fits into a PCMCIA slot on a laptop computer.

What is weird is that it had produced sound (or at least I thought we heard sounds from it). This was given to a friend in Russia, and we decided to reformat the HD and do a clean install with a Russian OS. I don't know if there was a simulation program or if the OEM disks had been tweaked in such a way as to allow this specific modem to generate sound through the computer speakers.

The phone lines here in Russia are usually pretty bad, and it is helpful to have audio when trying to connect.

Usually, John, if the modem produces its handshake sounds (I assume that is what you are alluding to) through the speakers, there is an audio cable involved so the signal can be conveyed through the sound card. Otherwise, the sounds would come from a little speaker on the modem itself. I have a modem on one of my computers that simply will not produce any sound. I believe it is because its speaker simply bit the dust. However, the modem itself just smokes, so I have learned to live with it. I don't know; that may be your option.

Perhaps, however, someone else reading our conversation might have a better idea and would like to speak up. :)
