TURNING OFF .BAK CREATION

A program has to be open to activate the checkbox, so open a program. (I don't know if this will be the default setting for all programs, but I assume so.) Then click on "Edit" in the menu bar and go down to properties. There you will see a check box labeled "make backup copy". Make sure this is not checked and you should be good to go.
