Anyone know how to turn off the default beep when typing in character mode? you here a beep if you backspace at the prompt or in vi when swiching modes...very anoyning...my latop's mute button is off too...i tried sndconfig but its not installed...running RH AS/3.0 i686

did google searches...came up with these:

.Xdefaults file add:
*visualBell: true ---> didn't work for me

In /etc/profile add:
setterm -blength 0 ---> this works, turned off vi beeps too

Are you running your Linux on VMWare by any chance?
I had once problems VMWare and incredibly loud beeps when using command prompt.
