when i put in a usb harddrive the computer begins scanning thru all files, can u turn this of, cause 1 of the files has a crc error and it fux up my computer every time.

i tried putting autoplay cdrom to 0 in regedit and do nothing in he properties for all files and even holding shift but it still scans thru each time.

After connecting the drive:

Open 'My Computer'
Right-Click the USB drive
Select 'Properties'
Select 'Auto-play'
Click on 'Select an action to perform' button
Choose 'Take no action'

There is a good chance this Doug Knox fix will work for you, even though the fix applies to CD's, use the same registry location and give it a try.

To Disable CD autoplay, completely, in Windows XP Home

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Then go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Create a new value called: NoDriveTypeAutoRun
Type is: DWORD
Value is: 0x000000b1 (177)

You may need to log off/log on or reboot for the change to take effect. Additionally, you may need Administrator privileges to edit the Registry.

To undo this change, set the NoDriveTypeAutoRun value back to 91 (145) instead of B1 (177)

You could also look through Group Policy to see what is available, or try some third party tools, perhaps TweakUI or similar.

Have you performed a ChkDsk /r on your removable drive to see if the bad sectors can be fixed?

well now i got a problem where the usb just makes noices and wont show up, i did a chkdsk /r and the usb harddrive stopped making noises but it only checked c:, when i try to make chkdsk f: it dosn't work cuz it hasn't showed up yet.

The drive sounds like it might be dying, any chance that it might still be under warranty? Anything that makes strange noises is usually an indication that the battle is already lost. Can you try it out on another machine?

The drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software (on site) that is self bootable and might be able to thoroughly check your (failing) drive as long as it is seen by the Bios.

Do you want to try formatting the drive and suffering the consequences?

Plenty of other recovery software listed here.
