TSOL 8 Troubleshooting

Just loaded a SUNFIRE 280R with TSOL 8 for the third time. When the machine boots it goes until it says "The system is ready" and then sits there. I believe it may be trying to start openwin but cannot and therefore hangs. Is there a way to boot into run level 2 or to otherwise see what may be going on. Linux guy really!

Appreciate any advice.
