Having an issue with the database. We have 2 summer interns. If either of them login to the database, then
myself and another user cannot login...

Database has been placed in a state by user admin...that prevents it from being opened.....
I have the ID os the pc that is placing it in the state,,,,
what is going on....PERMISSIONS????

I went to the machine that was locking the database ...closed it and everyone was able to get back into the application. The wierd thing is he was not doing any updates, just lookups (queries) etc.
THere are some passthru's being used..but they dont lock the database.

I expect your summer interns might be opening the MDB without creating an LDB file. If one of them is the first person in and they can't create the LDB then other users will have read-only access. Do you see the LDB file?

I'm having the same issue, only sporadically. Are your users consistently having issues or is access being denied sporadically as well? I haven't been able to determine any rhyme or reason behind the inconsistency I'm seeing - yet! Currently, I don't have any permissions set up, so I don't know how much that plays into it. I have noticed that the LDB file is being created - not sure if that's an issue for you or not. Sorry I don't have any suggestions for you. Hopefully, we can help each other figure this out. Its very frustrating.

You should have users attempt to create and then delete a simple text file in the directory containing your MDB file(s). If they can't create and delete, then this will cause issues if they are either the first user in or the last user out of the MDB.

Also check the Options dialog for 'Default Open Mode', and make sure it's not Exclusive, but Shared.

I have been numerous issues like this with several of our databases, beginning to believe it has something to do with maybe a recent M$ update. Lately I am unable to view the lockfiles. Or cannot get exclusive rights even though i am the only one in.
One other case a simple one level(no front or back end)little used database with no one in it (no lockfile present)I cannot write to as "someone has it locked".

Would love to hear more suggestions on how to fix this...none of the above helped me any......

I have checked the "Default Open Mode" setting and it is as it should be. Another user has tried creating and deleting a text file in the same directory, with no issues. Both yesterday afternoon and this morning my MDBs have been allowing multiple users without error, so I'm planning to try this again when there's an issue to see if the result is different.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm going to keep digging and see what else I can come up with. I'd still be interested in hearing any additional thoughts or suggestions that anyone has.

I'm confused why no one who is having issues has commented on whether or not every user of the MDB can create and delete a simple text file in the folder containing the MDB.

Sorry I wasn't more clear - I had one user test this for me, but not all. At this time, he was able create and delete a text file. I will ask the other 2 users to do the same. Although at this point, I'm not expecting a different result.

I have verified we can create text files in the subject folder but still have the problem.
Had the server reset yesterday and all was well this morning same problem again, cannot access the lockfile and the DB is read only with none in it and I don't believe anyone else has been in it either as we are under vacation shutdown with no one I can think having any business using this database.
It's a real mystery to me and only recently has become an issue for me.

Love to hear more suggestions on how to solve this one.

Regards,

What happens if you copy the file to a local hard-drive temporarily to run?

Check rights/access on the .mdw, that has caused a similar issue with me. Go into debug and do ?dbengine.systemdb to find what .mdw it's using.

When copying the file to local drive it runs fine, none of the "baggage" comes with it. I have done this several times to make updates and had IT admin later delete the server file and then I replaced it with mine. Then it works fine till the next day.....Currently I experience this problem with only one of our databases. I am again today running one on my hard drive to do updates and have this time compacte that one and plan to replace the server one again and w'll see what happens this time.

Oh, forgot to mention there are no mdw files involved here, we are running them wide open.

Why do you have to have IT admin delete the file? I thought everyone could create and delete files in the folder.
