I HAVE A HP VECTRA VL400 DESKTOP PC, MY BIOS IS IP.01.06US, I AM HAVING FREEZE UP ISSUES WHEN I'M TRYING TO OPEN TWO APPLICATIONS AT THE SAME TIME. I HAVE 512MB OF RAM ALREADY. SO I PURCHASED ANOTHER STICK OF RAM AND I HAVE AN OPEN DIMM SLOT. I PLACE THE TWO 512MB OF RAM, BUT ALL I GET IS THE BEEPS. BUT ONE STICK WILL WORK. WHAT CAN I DO TO INCREASE MY RAM CAPACITY? OR WHAT CAN I DO TO INCREASE MY ABILITY TO OPEN MORE APPLICATIONS WITHOUT FREEZING THE COMPUTER. I HAVE NORTON SYSTEM WORKS,AND FIREWALL, ARE THESE CAUSING THE FREEZE UP , OH I'M RUNNING WIN 98SE A. I HAVE DSL BUT IT'S DOESN'T WORK TOO GOOD SOMETIMES. I'VE RUN THE VIRUS SCAN AND IT'S ALL CLEAN. PLEASE HELP!

512mb of ram is all 98se needs,you would get no increase after 512mb as 98se doesn't do a good job with more memory.
As to why it won't work,your system most likely can't have more then 512mb. look up system board specs at hp.com .

what are the programs you are trying to run that it freezes, some programs have problems playing well with others.
What cpu and speed are you running?

If you need more memory, consider upgrading the OS. As rclarke said, 98 (or any Win9x/ME) doesn't handle large amounts of memory well.

If you must stay with 98, see this FAQ for an explanation as well as ideas on how to work around the problem:

I have a 1.4ghz Intel PentIII, and I am just trying to run the internet and listen to my realplayer at the same time. I went to download.com and downloaded a program "Dr. Salman's WinBooster." It seems to speed everything up,so far. Do you any suggestions on any software that can be used to improve proformance of my PC?

With the specs you have given you should be ables easily to do this, except real player is junk. And it can load your system with spyware. so I would suggest you get spybot,and AD-Aware, keep them up to date and delete their suggetions. Also an Anti-virus program would be good. Also update to latest drivers for the system,and any softpaqs,that hp-compaq think are a good idea. And if you don't have it,update dirextx to 9.0b and get real one,just the player though. And if all you are doing is listening to mp3's dump real and get winamp,or even mediaplayer9.

Well for starters, go here:

Spyware Info

After running at least one of the two (Spybot or Ad-Aware), then you need to lessen the amount of processes that are starting up with Windows. The easiest and safest way to do so is by using a program called msconfig. Just go to Start -> Run, and type msconfig hitting OK.

On the startup tab, only disable what you recognize that you don't need at startup. Some examples might be RealPlay.exe, MS Office (fast find), AOL, etc. Do not disable anything you're not sure you won't need. Keep in mind that you can't harm your system by unchecking everything, but certain features in Windows or some of your programs might not work properly if you disable something you shouldn't have. The best thing to do is run a google search on the web with the name of the item you want to uncheck. You're bound to find some information on it.

guys it's not a win98se issue with the memory,hence the beeps when both dimms are installed,the specs at hp.com say this board with an 815 chipset will only support 512mb max memory. the limitaion is in the board. the other problem seems to be a resource issue.

delete realplayer, there are many known issues, and windows latest medea player works quite well.

yeh right;
the GUID will track you to the john...
If you use 6.4 WMP or earlier,(also available on XP) than you're OK,...any WMP above 6.4 sucks the motherload.
RealOne works great Once you disable everything and get rid of the update scheduler..
