We set up a new peer-to-peer network with Win2000 and Win98 machines, using NetBEUI as the protocol. Everyone is in one workgroup. The Win2000 machines can login to the Win98 machines on the network, but when we try to connect to a Win2000 machine from Win98, it prompts us to log in as IPC$. We can't change that username because it's greyed out. None of the passwords we know work, icluding the guest password.
We were wondering how we can change the login name to something else, or how we can set the password for IPC$.

On one Win2000 server we were able to enable the guest account, and that allowed connections with no password needed. We didn't see that setting on the Win2000 workstations though.

Right click the c drive, and under properties you'll see shareing. Click it, and at the bottom right side you'll see add new share. Click it make a new name for the 2000 p/c to call itself: example \\Computername\sharename

then setup permissions, and that should do it! Iusally give full acces rights to small groups until I've go any bugs worked out, then give Adimistrator, and one other those rights evryone else can be user, and it's enough.

You should be able to enable the Guest account on the Win2K Pro stations. However, I don't recommend using the guest user. If I were you, I would setup users to access the shares. You could either setup a domain, or keep it as a workgroup. If you keep it as a workgroup you will have to setup users on all the 2000 systems. Then on your 98 machines, make sure you are using the Client for Microsoft Networks. This will give you a logon prompt, simply enter the user and password of an account on the 2000 machine that has access to the share.

By Deafult, Windows 2000 machines require a username/password combination to access shares on a machine. This is even if you have setup the share for everyone access and permitted the guest account to access the shares on the computer. Windows 95/98 do not permit you to access shares on a remote computer as anyone other than the username you are logged on as. Most likely, when setting up the 98 machine you put in a user name and it asked you to put in a password, but it wouldnt ask you this again if you didnt put in a password. So what is now happening is when you try to access the computer in Network Neighborhood, it queries the IPC$ service for the list of shares on the computer, and it is sending a username/password combo that doesnt exist on the W2K computer. To remedie the situation, click on start, logoff (username), and it will come back up to a logon prompt. Logon w/ a username/password combination that exists on the W2K machine and you will now be able to access the shares on the W2K machine.

Much appreciate your suggestions. I will follow up when we get a chance to try this.
