trying to install linux red hat. with a already partitoned hard drive

I have a pentuim 66mhz. <br>
and i bought a new hard drive the one I got was to big for my computer so i had to partition it just to get the hard drive installed. <br>
now I am stuck trying to install the software. <br>
can i partition a partiton .<br>
please help me.<br>

You can split a partition into smaller partitions. This is known as an extended partition, and is what I've used at home.<br>

I can think of a few ways of partitioning like you want to:<br>
<br>
1.) Use DOS/Windows FDISK. Very risky - I've never trusted it...<br>
<br>
2.) Use Linux fdisk. Not the most user friendly of programs, it must be said. <br>
<br>
3.) Get hold of FIPS and use that. From what I recall it can do the sort of partitioning you want.<br>
<br>
4.) My personally preferred method: Get hold of Partition Magic and use that. Boot off a floppy, partition your disk using the nice GUI, and reboot.<br>
<br>
Whichever one you use, make sure you have GOOD backups of any critical data on your box. Speaking from bitter experience, partitioning can be risky to your data's health ;^)<br>

It should work, but I've never tried it. &lt;Gets off fence... &gt; I heard there were problems with RedHat 5.0 (?) Disk Druid hanging after you'd entered your info during the install. Also heard that it got fixed, so &lt;gets back on fence&gt; you should be OK.<br>

Remember those backups, though.

Windows 98 fdisk is a piece of junk, guaranteed to trash anything on the drive. It won't make multiple partitions.<br>
<br>
Red Hat 5.2 Disk Druid is easy to use and does a good job. If you want more flexibility, use Linux's fdisk. The command line interface is clunky, but it works. I found it not much more difficult than PC/MS-DOS 7.0, and earlier, versions of fdisk.<br>

You will probably repartition several times before you get it "right."

Yeah, Disk Druid is excellent. Are you planning on keeping any other operating system on your computer other than Linux???<br>

If not just use Disk Druid and delete whatever partitions you made, and then create a Native Linux partition and atleast 1 Swap partition.<br>

If you boot from a redhat cdrom, and say a workstation setup it will repartion your hard drive and make the swap as well at the same time, if you need a copy of partition magic or fips I have both just e-mail me and I will soft it for you.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The best overall partitioning app I've used so far is Linux cfdisk; it's not _quite_ as powerful as Linux fdisk, but it has an easy enough interface for my RARENTS to figure out & it can do anything you're likely to need when partitioning any drive for virtually any OS. And the best part is: it's free!<br>

Keep in mind that some older versions of linux such as RH 5.2 will not recognize above 1024 sectors without some manual calculations. RH 6.0 doesn't have this limitation.<br>
