Trying to install IE6 on w98 install fails every time. Downloaded the complete install booted into safe mode shut down all anti-virus, no files of zero bytes and still fails the install.
Cleared the uninstall folder did almost every fix i could find no luck any one else havethe problem? it fails after the EULA screen.

Getting an error message? How 'bout posting it, if so...

Howdy:

As per Microsoft...

The recommended system configuration to use Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 is Microsoft Windows® 2000, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me), or Microsoft Windows NT® on a computer running with a Pentium III processor and 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM.

Can you see Win98 on there anywhere?? I can't. The reason being, IE6 was never meant as an upgrade for a Win98/98SE system. It was developed for Win2000 and XP systems. Win98 does meet the minimum specs but NOT the minimum recommended operating system period.

Some people get lucky, most don't !!

Murray

Sorry, Murray, but gotta differ on this one with you...

taken from:

"Internet Explorer 6 SP1 is the most recent version of the Internet Explorer 6 core technologies in Microsoft Windows® XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional. Internet Explorer 6 SP1 provides a private, reliable, and flexible browsing experience for users of Windows XP, Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me), Windows 2000, Windows 98, and Windows NT® 4.0 Service Pack 6a."

...so, I'm not sure why you're advising otherwise...??

I cover a about 60 users with the dominant flavor being 98 SE (can you tell I work for a gov't agency?) We run 6.0 on most all of those machines as necessitated by some home-grown web-based apps and have nary a problem (at least none that aren't user-based...)

When i stated i downloaded the full install it was the sp1 full install of IE. I realize thatit wasnt designed for w98 butsp1 states it is. I just get a failed install every time.
I know that a lot of people have had a major headache getting it to work after installation, but most have been able to get it installed. Several secure sites i go to recommend using IE6 for the browser, that is why i am wanting it installed.

No details at all?
Just failed install?
What vintage of IE is on the machine that you're trying to install to?
From where did you pull down the full install?
Microsoft or another site?
Have you tried to install online, rather than bringing down the whole package (as this does leave room for error)?
Be aware that these full downloads are species specific, so if you erroneously brought down, say, an install for ME or 2k, it's going to fail.

carr:

Go back to your own link and click on "System Requirements".. Again, Win98 is no where to be seen.

Murray

Hi Murray & Carr,

Just read your ongoing thread guys, so I clicked the link for myself - Murray, Win98 IS in the list of OS's for which IE6 SP1 is recommended by Microsoft ...

"...Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1

Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is the latest version of Internet Explorer and includes a full installation of the Web browser.

Internet Explorer 6 SP1 is the most recent version of the Internet Explorer 6 core technologies in Microsoft Windows® XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional. Internet Explorer 6 SP1 provides a private, reliable, and flexible browsing experience for users of Windows XP, Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me), Windows 2000, Windows 98, and Windows NT® 4.0 Service Pack 6a...."

Hope this resolves the question guys.

MY only question for Carr is, "are you using 98 or 98 SE. There is a difference, and SE is the more stable and preferred version of Windows around here.
I am an ICT teacher with a 60 station NT network at the school, and I handle most of the 'tech' issues here.

Most of the 'issues' I have had have been using machines which have come with a pre-load of Windows from the PC Manufacturer - in our case, Acer.
In most cases I have dumped the preload, and done a clean install of the OS (98SE), and problems solved themselves.

Mike:

Same thing I told carr.. go to that site and then click on the "System Requirements" over on the right side.. NO WHERE is Win98 shown there !!

Murray

It is a generic error right after the EULA and says it failed to install to re-run setup and failed on all 5 attempts.tried install over thge internet twice and three from the full download two in safe mode.

Murray,

You can split hairs all you want...Win98 supports 6.0 perfectly well.
As previously stated, we run too many machines with 6.0 with no hitches.
98 as an OS is mentioned twice again in exception to the paragraph you keep citing.
It's no wonder that they try to ease it out of the fine print, as they drop 98 from support this summer, but I'll need a little more than its abscence from one paragraph to back up your claim that it was never meant as an upgrade. Were that the case, Microsoft would surely have never offered the 98-specific download, or the ME specific one for that matter.

futuretech204,
What version of IE is on the pc you're trying to install 6.0 on??

And mfmac[/b[,
SE is the only version of 98 I deal with...

futuretech204,

Also, when you post the version of IE that exists on the machine in question, please include the "full" version number (i.e. go to Help, About Internet Explorer, and post the complete version # (ex: #.#.###.###) as well as an upgrades...thanks.

Also, while you're in there digging around, do a Find and locate this file: advpack.dll
When found, right click on it, select properties, and locate the version # for the file. Please post it...

Setup was unable to download the required components. Please make sure you are connected to the Internet, or try to run Setup again later.

This is the error that is generated and yes I am connected to the Internet.

It appears you have the correct setup files, but the installation failed. Try closing down all other programs and try running Setup again. If that still does not work, contact Microsoft Product Support Services for additional help

This one when doing the install with the complete program downloaded.

...still need the info I asked for in the last post.

will get it as soon as i get back to that computer.

I use IE 6.0 SP 1 on two Win 98 First Addition PCs with no problems whatsoever. The only IE I ever had problems with was 5.0. I know, I'm lucky.

Jim

Interesting, I'm having the same problem, or at least identical symptoms, on Win 2000. I have IE version 5.00.3105.0106CO. I believe that is considered version 5.5. After I accept the EULA, it says "Initializing Setup. Please wait...", then a pop-up box appears with the message "Setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all applications and try running Setup again." I've tried everything that has been suggested here so far. I've reinstalled the Microsoft installer. I've killed everything that isn't essential to running the system. I've attempted installation from a local copy, from MS's on-line version, and from Windows Update. Always the same result. It does seem to get a little ways through the installation, because it breaks links that open in a new window (links in Word documents and such too). I have to re-register some components to get it to work again, but then everything is fine. This is on my work machine, at home, I run version 6.0 with no problems,on all my systems: Win 2000, on a Win98 system, and on a Win XP system.

I've asked for our helpless desk to assist, but that's like cutting off your toes to fit into a new shoe. They recommend re-formatting my hard drive... :-(
