We are in the process of switching from Legato Networker to Veritas Netbackup. We would like to convert the Networker server to a media server for Netbackup. We still want to keep Networker installed for legacy restores. What I have discovered is, once I shutdown Legato Networker and start Netbackup I can run a backup. Then I shutdown Netbackup and start Networker again. Now when I try to run a Networker restore, Networker cannot load the 'drivers' to control the robot in the tape library. I have opened a case with Veritas and they have suggested only removing the sg drivers. Unfortuantely I still have reboot the server to unload the sg driver.

The old connundrum - I assume Windows NT is your O/S?

We had a similar problem with Omniback and the problem is as follows ....
NetBackup uses the NT driver to utilize Tape Drives - This makes it more reliable. Software suchas Omniback, Legato, Arcserve all use proprietary drivers which makes it easier to configure.

But - Those drivers cannot be loaded or the NT driver will not work and therfore Veritas will not work.

Solution - Get another tape drive, use a differenet server or get used to the reboots all the time - There is no alternative - Sorry but that is the way NT is configured.

PGPhantom,

Thanks for your reply. Sorry I should have mentioned that the OS is Solaris 8. I'll keep pushing Veritas for a solution other than reboots.

I've done the same for AIX successfully by disabling the robot control from Veritas (mkdev -l ovpass0) without needing to reboot (same robot conmtrol path for both products).
I don't know if Solaris can do the same, but isn't it easier to switch between robot controls paths ?
If you have multiple scsi ports, just configure legato for one port and veritas for the other. When you need one of the products, just go to the back of the machine and swap your scsi cable.

I recently solved this problem. If you can send me your email, I can help you with instructions. It is very simple.
