Hi folks,
I have a cisco4006 switch with Sup-II and catOS 7.3.
I have a server with 2 Network Cards.Using a software I group these two NICs and make a team out of them. Now I assign a vlan id to it(Basically, the packets coming out of this will have a vlan tag(802.1q) in addtion to explicitly say, they belong to a particular vlan).
Example:assigned a vlan id=1
In the switch the default vlan is 1.
I have trunked the two ports through which server is connected to network.
When I ping from server to switch, ping succeeds.
Now I change the vlan id on server to 2.and try to ping. Ping fails.Though the ports are trunked, why ping fails??
Is there any thing else to be done with trunking.
OR,
Incase I connect another machine to this switch through a port which is set to vlan 2.Then try to ping from this machine to the server(whos vlan id =2) or vice versa, ping fails.

Why trunk is not taking care of carrying different vlans on the same trunk?
Please let me know..It urgent..
Thanks,
Sas

Teaming NICs is very different from trunking.

If you want higher bandwidth, team the NICs on the server and create an Etherchannel on the switch.
If you want server presence across multiple Vlans then you will need a trunking protocol on the NICs. (ISL or dot1q)
"Standard" NIC tend not to support trunking.

Cheers

Yeah trunking needs dot1q protocol at NIC.Thats what been done at the server end.The server has been assigned with the vlan id, that means, packets sent by NIC are tagged with VLAN tag or dot1q tag in additional to ordinary packet. So now NIC supports trunking..
Then why its not recieving or sending packets other than native vlan?
regards,
sas

Are you trying to ping across 2 vlans? If so you need a router module.

You need to make sure your VLAN 2 is defined and in active state in the switch. Make sure the ports do have trunking and allow VLAN 2 to pass, then depending on how you did it in the intel NICs (assuming the brand) make sure its a Fast Etherchannel config, then program the switch to do a channel-group for those 2 ports.

If you dont have a router, you cant pass traffic between VLAN's. So when you put the server on VLAN 2, the traffic will pass on the trunk link, but it will not go to VLAN 1 without a router. Degg

Buckweet,
How do I set vlan 2 as active?bcoz,Its a layer 2 switch and only one vlan could be active at a time right?I mean, since the default vlan is 1 and interface is set to vlan 1 then how this vlan 2 could be up and running?
when I say "sh vlan" it shows all the created vlans and status is "active".
My doubt is, if I send a packet with different vlan ids tagged, can the packets go to those vlans in the network?
If I create vlans 2 to 4.Then I have vlans 1,2,3 and 4 on the network. Now I connect a system in each vlan.I will place a server with vlan software running, in vlan 1.I will tag the packets of the server with vlan 2.Whether a system in vlan 2 on the switch be able to receive the packet, since the packet is tagged with vlan id 2?
Pls let me get a clarification..
