TrueSync Desktop on Vista issues

The TrueSync installation hung up after I got a "Severe: This installation has detected that a previous installation or un-installation requires you to restart your computer" message. FAQ 807-2246 in this forum got me arround that problem.

Then, I discovered there are issues with Vista not allowing changes to files in the "Program Files" folder. TrueSync, of course, stores its data files by default in the UserData folder, a few levels deep under Program Files. So I uninstalled, reinstalled and changed the default folder to one under Users.

Now, a new problem for which I do not yet have a solution. The initial Sync with my RexPro 5000 successfully transferred the data to the desktop. But now, when I attempt to Sync again, the dialog for TrueSync Setup appears again, even though setup was already done.

Michael, The docking station I have has a serial connector. How are you connecting to a USB port?

Walter

Walter,

My docking station has a serial port only as well.

I'm using a Belkin F5U409 USB to serial port converter.

So when I load up truesync the connection option offered is Com port 3, but the usb/belkin port is COM port 6.

Michael

Mike,

One option, which I used on my Vista system, is to get an I/O card with a serial port. The card I bought has a parallel and serial port. I/O cards are cheap but you need an available slot in your machine.

Ira, I had it working on an XP laptop with PCMCIA slot, but can't seem to get it working on a Vista laptop with USB/serial adaptor and docking station. The TS software gives Port 3 as the only connection option, but the USB port is port 6. ???

Walt, great suggestion but I'm using a laptop.

Anybody know how to reassign the port numbers? ie: assign port 3 to that particular USB connector?

Michael,
I'm flying blind here since I've never tried any of this, sticking to XP, so I can't be much help. Here are my only thoughts, with apologies in advance if you've already gone past this..
1. I assume you tried connecting with the docking station and seeing if it worked despite the discrepancy between port numbers. If not, I would. The TS of course doesn't know from USB ports, which do not have numbers like com ports.
2. Did this Belkin converter come with any software to assist with connections? I've never tried such a converter. I do use a USB to PS/2 keyboard converter for my Avant Stellar keyboards, which work only with PS/2. What I've found there is that despite the fact that there's no documentation explaining why, some brands of converters work for this keyboard, and some do not, and apparently those that don't might work for another keyboard. Going to a help forum for these converters, if any exist, might yield some helpful information.
3. Xircon did make a USB docking station--I've got one. It was made for the Rex 6000, and I don't know if it works with the 5000. I have a 5000 and have not had to try. You might find one on Ebay. I had thought they also made one for the 5000--which was probably my mistake but explains how I ended up with this one. But maybe they did... I could try mine with the 5000 but since I haven't needed it, I've been loathe to experiment and chance some damage to my Rex.
4. I am assuming that either your laptop doesn't have a PMCIA card slot, or you tried that route and it didn't work. Is that right?
5. My Thinkpad has no serial ports, just USB ports, but the docking station made for it does supply a serial port. That might not be convenient and might not be the case with your laptop anyway, but a thought.

That's all I've got, other than to say Good Luck and to thank you for letting us know what happens, as at some point I'll have to face this, I know.
