Troubleshooting a Document Library Problem (SPS question)

My problem is two-fold.
1) In my SPS the default "documents" webpart has somehow 'disappeared' yet I still have documents on my server. I've attempted to re-add the webpart but no documents show up. How can I get them back?
2)On the "recently published documents" I frequently get "Query Failed". Any idea why and how I can repair this?

If you haven't already done this then two things...

I presume you mean the documents dashboard as opposed to the documents web part....

I had to rectify this prblem in the past and managed it (if memory serves) by creating a new workspace and exporting and importing the relevant parts into my original workspace.
I presume you haven't got a back up policy in place with veritas or something similar. If you did then you could just recovery it from that.
