i already posted this problem once, but i have not yet resolved the issue. i am running windows 2000, and very often when i reboot (say 7 out of 10 times) the computer does not recognize the mouse; i have to reboot again, sometimes as many as 10 times until the computer "finds" the mouse. some members have suggested that this might be a driver problem, some say a port problem.

i'm thinking of just purchasing a usb mouse (or an extension that converts the reg ps/2 one to a usb), i figure it'll take less time than getting to the root of the problem.

does that make sense?

What model of mouse is it? Microsoft or Logitech? model #?
What version of Windows or other operating system?

it's an hp mouse, i don't know the model number and i'm running windows 2000. but i must tell you that i had the same problem with another mouse that i tried (a logitech) AND when i was using win xp on the same computer

Hmm. I've seen a couple HP mice at a store recently, and found they were made by RCA. Maybe you could try checking RCA's web site for any support or drivers for mice they manufacture?

i don't think it's worth the hassle. isn't it easier to just get a usb mouse?

Well, I wouldn't tend to think it's because of the difference between USB and PS/2 mice, though I reserve the right to be wrong. I almost would wonder if it could be a problem with the motherboard, maybe a bad ps2 port or in need of a BIOS/DRIVER update for the motherboard, since you've already tried for teh mouse, and since it is happening with more than more than one mouse, and with 2 different operating systems. If you built the machine, try checking the motherboard manufacturer's website for BIOS/DRIVER updates for your board, or check the PC manufacturer if you bought one from Compay, Dell, etc...
