Trouble with depth

I'm dynamically creating lines and I want them to show up behind other objects on the stage. The problem is the stage objects don't seem to have a depth and I can't seem to assign them a depth. I've tried the attachmovieclip function and can't seem to get it working right. Any help with dynamic MC depth versus MC on stage depth would be greatly appreciated.

Clips on the stage in the authoring environment have no depth property as such - if you want to assign depths to them you can use swapDepths() and then you have code control over the depths of all the clips.
