You'd have thought this was simple enough, wouldn't you?
I decided it was now time to network 2 Win98se comps, and duly bought a Belkin 'starter network kit' comprising 2 10/100Mbs nic's and the cable. Now, although new to this, the configuration seems straight forward enough, and the accompanying booklet is quite specificl, but the comps fail to see each other. (The cards are correctly installed, along with the drivers and cable....)
With the package comes software to enable easy configuration, so in desperation I tried it, with the same results.
Despite claims of free tech. support, there are no phone no.s to be seen.

I run AOL, does anyone know if this could be an issue, and does anyone know why the **** **** **** computers won't talk?
Help please, before I eat the furniture...... >:-< My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

Networking Peer-to-peer is extremely easy.

Here's what I did (Windows ME--Windows 98)

goto Network Neighbourhood and click the Home Networking Wizard, and basically follow the step in there, it will ask for a computer name, and it will ask for a workgroup name. Enter those in then when prompted to make a network disk, say "yes" and create the disk, then run the network disk on any other computer you wish to include to your home network.

Then you have to enable file sharing.

To do that goto My Computer and right click on (A: drive, C: drive, and your CD drive)and goto properties in each one and click on the sharing tab, and say shared as: (then type whatever you want the name to be)(that name will be the one that shows up on the other computer.) Then click on the button that says full (located under acces type) and then specify a password at the bottom. Press apply, and then comfirm your password, then press ok. And do that step to all drives you wish to share on both computers.

Then goto Network (under control panels) and click on Client for Microsoft Networks in the list, then click properties and make sure Log on to Windows NT is "un"-checked and make sure to "check" logon and restore network connections. The primary network login should say "Client for Microsoft Networks".

Then in that same list scroll down to find TCP/IP (your brand of network card) 10/100, highlight it and click porperties. In properties the following tabs should say the following:
DNS Config- Disable DNS
WINS Conifg- DiSABLE WINS
and if you are using a cable modem to access the internet from both computers, make sure under the IP address tab says "obtain IP address automatically" (depending on your cable modem, and only if your ISP says that you must do that)

That's it.

Good luck [deejay]

98SE has internet connection sharing. There are also some 3rd party programs that will also allow sharing. (wingate is one of them) Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

2 computers can share the same dial-up, and both can be on at the same time, but it would be extremely slow, wouldn't recommend going on at the same time. Remember though, if you don't have a network hub, then the host computer will need to be on to run the internet, regardless of the computer you are using to access the net.

And to answer 11MAC22's question--yes I believe that the Networking wizard is available on Windows 98 if not I can send a zip file with my network disk files, so that you can run it, but make sure you change the computer name and the workgroup name. (It will be set to the names for my network. [deejay]
