Trouble Regenerating Keycodes?

Our BCM50 recently crapped out on us... So we purchased a new BCM(release 5, same as the old one) with no keycodes on it, and had someone regenerate the keycodes for us from our old system.

She registered the new system for us, but when attempting to regenerate the keycodes, gets the following error:

ERROR: You do not have permission to regenerate keycodes for this System.

Anyone know why she may be getting this error? Our old system had a ton of keycodes, so if there is anyway to regenerate these, we would love to do it.

First of all, you need to get both BCM's registered.

Check that the new BCM hasn't got any other keycodes registered.

Now the trick here, is to use the try n'buy function on your original BCM to add in a new feature.

Once that is done and a new keycode generated, you can migrate the keycode to a new unit.

The reason is probably due the first BCM having a different distributer. Changing using the Try n,buy option will transfer the BCM to your own distributer.

I had the same problem today on a BCM 50 release 3 and it worked OK.

If it's working, then leave it alone!.

Thanks for the response....

1) The new BCM50 was registered, recently, by the eprsonw e have doing the keycode regeneration. I have no idea if the old bcm is registered, i would assume it is, since it was heavily keycoded

2) the orginal BCM50 is fried... system failure, we cant access it. is there a way to get a try and buy keycode without the ystem actually being up and running?

I would assume you are correct in that the first BCM likely has a different distributor. so if i am understanding you corecttly, we need to get a try and buy keycode for the old system, so that both are fromt eh same distrbuter, then she can regenerate?

Firebirdscrambler, that did the trick! thanks so much.... was able to use the regenerated keycode on the new system.

question - we had the old BCM50 backed up to a usb drive... can i restore that backup to the new BCM50?

As long as it is the same release and you must also install the updates before you restore.

both systems are release 5.

how do i know if it is fully updated or not?

Look in Element Manager for the update history. If it hasn't been updated to the latest go ahead and do it.

right, forgive my ignorance, but how do i know what the latest and greatest is?

You must have access to Avaya's software download site. If you don't have access call an Avaya partner. The latest is BCM050.R500.SU.System-013.201111. Bottom line is that the software level of the system that was backed up and the one to be restored must be at least on the same software level. The one to be restored can be a higher release. That is why I mentioned updating to the latest.

thanks for the info... the system shows no update history, and a "current system software version" of: 9.0.1.00.455

ok, so i got the newest updates installing now...

once its done, can i run the restore, with the BCM NOT connected to the expansion units? or do i need the expansion units to be plugged in?

You only need the main unit.

To restore the new BCM with the old backup you need to have on the new system the same patches that were on the old. If there is no record of the old patches then you will have to reprogram the new because the resore wont work.

The rule I use is as follows

On the replacement BCM, Install the keycode first. Reboot if asked!.

Install the system patch either at the same release as on the original BCM or use the latest release obtained from the Avaya site.

Install the desktop patch either at the same release as on the original BCM or use the latest release obtained from the Avaya site.

Carry out the restore making sure that all the tick box's are ticked.

I found that I encountered many wierd errors if I didn't follow the procedure as shown above.

The reason why I had to regenerate a BCM 50 keycodes was because the in build modem had never worked.

I don't any method of checking it out other than replacing the whole unit.
