I have installed Exchange 2000 on a w2k server in a domain with Exchange 5.5.
I have created test accounts in AD with the new email server and I can send / receive with no problems.
The problem I am having is migrating the email accounts over from 5.5 to 2000.

Things I have tried:
I have tried going into exchange 5.5 admin | select a recipient | advanced tab and tried to select a different home server. The new ex 2000 server is not listed

I have tried selecting a user in AD | right click | Select exchange task and select move mailbox but it is not an option to choose from. Only delete mailbox and enable instant msg. The test accounts that were created on the 2000 email server have the move option but the users on 5.5 do not.

I have tried the migration wizard that is included with Ex2000 with no luck. I can create a pst file but get errors when trying to move the mailbox over: A mailbox could not be found in the target directory with the address 'x500:/o=usi/ou=USI/cn=Recipients/cn=jjones'.
and An Exchange mailbox could not be created in store

ADC is set to replicate directory information between Exchange Server 5.5 and Active Directory
ADC is also set up to replicate between the ex5.5 server and the ex2000 server

I'm not for sure if I need to:- 300129 Establish Mail Flow and Directory Replication Between Exchange Server 5.5 and Exchange 2000
If all else fails I can go through and have everyone save there email to a pst file and recreate there account in ad. That seems like a lot of unnecessary work though.

Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thank you.

Check out faq858-3483 , there is alot of reading it. Go over the steps and you setup to see what you may have missed.

You need to concentrate mainly on your ADC setup. If your intention is to migrate to E2K and get rid of Ex5.5, I would suggest setting up your ADC connection agreement's between Ex5.5 and AD only. Also the Exchange Migration Wizard would be the tool used to move mailboxes from Ex5.5 to E2K

Yes it is my intention to get rid of the 5.5 server. Just a quick question but why would you suggest only have the ADC connection between the 5.5 and AD? This is my first install of Ex2000 and I'm not to familier with this so I'm just curious.
I'm taking marcs41 advice and going back over some of the instructions. Thank you both for your help

ok after reviewing the installation procedure the only thing that I can find that is different is that during the /forestprep and /domainprep it never asked me to create an exchange 2000 organization or join an existing 5.5 org. The option never shows up. Basically skips that part of the install. So it not create those options in the schema. Any ideas other then start over from scratch?

Not just like that,no. You have to understand it is not easy to cover things this way without being in front of the machine(s).

If there is no major impact at this time, I would suggest a restart from scratch, how awfull it may be time-wise.

You will probably spend more time on figuring out what is and wrong and then still fixing it, if possible.

woohooo found it :) After some intense research and reformating and starting a new installation...I found it. For some reason or another AD did not completely remove my first attempt at instaling exchange 2000. So /forestprep did not bother to ask if I wanted to join an existing domain or create a new one.
Here is some helpful links for anyone with the same problems:

Although I did not recieve any errors the following link below is what fixed this.
