Trouble Installing Maxtor 160 GB Hard Drive 1

I recently purchased a maxtor PY160P0 hard drive for use as a slave in my windows XP system with a western digital 80 GB hard drive as the master dirve. The installation went well with the Maxblast 3 software with the maxtor drive attached to the supplied promise controller card but in the final stages of the installation the system reported that an error occurred during the installation and the device is not installed. In the devise manager, the maxtor drive has a yellow exclamation mark on it with an error code 28. I can use the drive with no problem but it is operating in DOS compatibility mode. I have tried every possible jumper modification for both drives and have attached the maxtor to the slave position of the main controller but this does not help. I have initialized and partitioned the drive with windows but this does not help.

Does anyone know why this drive is in DOS compatibility mode and how to solve the problem?

Is the drive detected correctly in the BIOS? There are limits on certain BIOS's of 137gb. You could try your motherboard manufacturer to see if they have a BIOS update for this size drive.

The drive is identified in the BIOS and I have applied the 48-bit Logical Block Addressing (LBA) support for ATA Packet Interface (ATAPI) disk drives. I can see the full 160 GB for the drive when I access my computer.

Have you tried getting an updated driver for your controler card? Have you tried connecting this drive directly to the motherboard? I can't think of any thing else at the moment, but I will sit & think.

Thanks for thinking about my problem! I have obtained updated drivers for the controller card but this did not help. I have since given up using the controller card and I have attached the drive to the motherboards primary controller and have configured the drive to be a slave. My other drive is configured as a master. The problem still continues. If the devise manager is queried, the problem drive with a yellow exclamation mark indicates that one of the generic drivers are not loaded.

Since conecting the drive to the motherboard have you reformatted it?
Are you able to remove it from the device manager & re-boot Windows to see if the drivers will be installed correctly?
This is very puzzling & I hate puzzles. I always need to sort these things out.

My guess is that you are not using an IDE cable rated for ATA133. You need the newer 80-conductor cables or XP will revert to PIO mode on ATA100 or faster drives.

Here is more information for the puzzle. I am able to format the drive either with maxtor software or with windows XP. Either results in the same effect, yellow exclamation. I have removed the drive from the device manager and when I used the find new hardware control. It identified the drive but could not load the driver and the yellow exclamation resulted. The driver that has diffculty loading is the disk.sys but the PartMgr.sys does load.

Also, the drive is attached to the motherboard with a 17-inch IDE Cable for Ultra/100 so it should work with the ATA/133 drive. Both the master drive and the problematic slave are operating in the Ultra DMA mode 5. Since the question was raised regarding the cable, I will look into another one.

Hmmm.. Very interesting, I came accross your post while trying to find a fix to the EXACT same problem with the EXACT same drive. The only things you do not say are, What kind of computer you are trying to put the drive into, Wich OS you are using, XP Home or Pro. I am only wondering this so that maby we could resolve exactly what the issue is. I have an HP 750C using XP Home, with an 80Gig. Samsung HD that started to make noise. So I bought the Maxtor PY160P0 to place into the system so i could copy my data over. My plan was to use the drive as a Slave and then switch the 2 drives so that the 80Gig was the slave. Never the less, I am having the exact same issue as you. A friend and myself have spent many hours trying to figure this out as well.

I have placed the cable in the computer that came with the HD. This did NOT help. We updated all drivers and checked the MS Database for answers, there were none that we could see. The BIOS finds the drive just fine and XP will see the Partitions when they are made. but the yellow sign continues, After telling several friends in the IT field this problem, they have had simular answers. They have suggested re-installing XP and seeing if it isn't the disc sys. file that is corupted or possibly several files within XP. I had my friend install the drive into another HP computer only 6 mo. newer than mine and it loaded and worked with NOT ONE ISSUE. I would re-install XP but HP does not supply the recovery disc with their computers anymore. Let me know if you decide to re-install XP and if this works.. I hope this might help both of us..

Thanks for your information! I presently have a Pentium 4 PC operating at 1.9 MHz. My OS is XP home edition. I still have not figured out to get the drive to work but I have determined that the yellow exclamation is caused by the disk.sys native driver not being loaded. Actually the driver is loaded during the installation but is subsequently removed and the exclamation results. I have not found what causes the driver to be removed. I have not decided to reload the OS as of now but rather I am looking to find the errant file or conflict that is causing the problem.

I have finally solved the problem with drive and now it installs properly with no indicatin of a problem. I first determined what the problem was by searching for the setupapi.log file on my C: drive. Within that file I found the following message:

#E275 Error while installing services. Error 1060: The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
#E122 Device install failed. Error 1060: The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
#E154 Class installer failed. Error 1060: The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

This indicated that one of the filter drivers was invalid for the Maxtor drive. To repair this problem I modified the registry according to the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article #823774 and rebooted the computer. The drive installed properly and the computer requested to be rebooted. Once that was done, it worked perfectly.
