I am having a problem when trying to install Windows XP Pro from the cd. The cd is good it is only causing the problem on an older machine. Is there a way to format the drive with NTFS then copy the cd files to the hard drive and then run install from the c: drive???? any other suggestions?? seems to possibly be related to the type of ram in the system.. Is it because this computer is not able to boot from the CD-ROM? I dont fully understand the issue here. If it is because you can not boot from the CD-ROM drive, the easiest way is to use the setup disks for XP which you will have to download. If this is the case, let me know and I can point you in the direction of getting the disks, if this is not the issue, please more info.

no it will start the install and stop at about 6% of the file copy process and say it can't find a certain .dll file. However we have had this issue on many older machines. Some types of PC66 and PC100 SDRAM are causing the issue. If I use the setup diskettes it still requires the cd to load the files and the problem occurs again. My theory is that if I can get the files to the hard drive, run install from the hard drive and NOT FROM CD the install may work. I am trying to find out if anyone has formatted with NTFS then copied the XP PRO cd to the hard drive and been successful installing XP PRO from the hard drive rather than from CD. I have already downloaded the floppies and tried that but it was no help. Keith Buchanan

wncads,
I have. However, there's no need to use an NTFS partition. You can copy the CD onto a FAT partition and install from there. It's been a while, but I believe formatting an NTFS partition later through the setup won't be a problem. If it is, you can always convert the FAT partition after getting XP installed without losing data.

Unless you have ntfsdos's full version you cannot write to and ntfs drive so i suggest that you format the c: with fat and copy the CD to the C: and then install from the C, you can change the size at at the installation Drive question I had a similar problem installing W2k, what occurs it that the installation gets to the point that it needs to recognize the CDROM but cannot, usually you get this at the graphical interface.

Hope this helps
