I am trying to get my customer's i2004 phone working in time for him to go overseas. I got the phone working fine when it was connected locally in the same site as the BCM 400. When he took the phone out of the office, he doesn't get a connection. I have done work for years on the Norstar MICS and CICS but the VOIP on the BCM is still kind of new to me. I have been working with my customer's IT tech and we just can't seem to get it up and running. He set up a static IP for the system and when trying to test if he can see anything on port 7000, he comes up blank.
One stupid question is, do we need to have both network ports on the BCM connected to the network in the office? Is one port for the local IP and the other port for the external IP?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

Set up a VPN that connects back to the site the BCM is connected to. It will be a lot more secure that way.

Thanks biv343.
I spoke to an IT tech the other day and he said that he has read the i2004 will not connect unless you set up a VPN. I know my customer would like it to work as easy as taking his phone and plugging it into any internet connection and just automatically connecting to the BCM without having to carry any extra equipment around. Is this possible or is the VPN the only way to go?
What if the BCM has it's own Static IP and is not behind a Firewall?

He is leaving to go overseas today and I would like to give him a quick fix at least for the time being.

Thanks

The problem is that whatever internet connection you plug into is going to need to have the appropriate rules in place for the phone to work, as well as support bidirectional/cone NAT. Chances are you would have one way audio virtually anywhere you would go. Just plugging an i2004 into any connection doesn't guarantee it will work.

I would suggest a client based VPN with an i2050 softphone and a USB headset. Establish your VPN connection, fire up the softphone and be done with it. That's a lot easier than hauling a phone around.

Biv343 has the same solution that we have used in cases like this. works like a charm.

You do not want to put the bcm on the internet without a firewall. Trust me.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I have talked with my customer and explained the situation to him and reluctantly it looks like he'll go with the VPN.
This is what happens when you get involved in a job after the sales team promises everything in the world to the customer.
