I had several Adware/Trojan's on a laptop that I am trying to clean up. Symantec Anti-Virus (8.1) identified 3 trojans:
Download.Trojan
Trojan.Desktophijack
Tojan.StartPage.L

It also found an unnamed trojan (%SystemDrive%\thun32.dll). I turned off system restore and deleted all of the files. Some of which I had to do in safe mode. I then followed Symantec's directions for removing the attacks.

I then ran Hijackthis and removed entries that were bad. The following entry keeps coming back upon reboot of the computer:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://shdocpl.dll/asst.htm

I have tried to remove this in and out of safe mode and it just won't stay deleted. Here is my current Hijackthis log:

Well, besides using EWIDO (Great Program, saved my *ss more than once), you should update XP to SP2...

IMO, aswell, replace Black Ice with another Firewall, either ZoneAlarm, Kerio, Tiny, or Symantec's own...

btw. is the TCP/IP listed your Provider?
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{A5D0416D-B13F-47B6-A0F6-AD9B8FAAE942}: NameServer = 68.28.50.11 68.28.58.11

if not fix it...

Ben

"If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer..."

you will have to disable spysweeper's protection guard as it will interfere with the fixes you are trying to do!

Thanks all for your tips. I was able to remove the offending items. Ewido found another attack that SAV and SpySweeper didn't. (Alexa) Everthing is working again.

Due to the function of this laptop and corporate standards I am required to use Black Ice and Symantec Anti-Virus. Thank you all again for your help.
