Trim URL address

Can anyone help me to write a forumla on a text field that will pick out the main site from a URL:

IE

http://www.newss.bbc.co.uk

from

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/default.stm

AND edinburghnews.scotsman.com
from

http://edinburghnews.scotsman.com/sport/Keeper-steps-into-spotlight-after.4297967.jp

extractstring({table.string},"//","/")
