I am trying to find about using a TreeView within my Access 2k3 app to display hierarchy. Can someone point me to some examples or info on this?

The TreeView is a fairly advanced control to populate, and usually requires recursion of some sort. The MSDN documentation should provide you some samples of how to do it using recordset data.

I've used it successfully in Access forms, so I can help you if you get to the point where you can't get it working. The TreeView control resides in the "Microsoft Windows Common Controls 6.0" library (service pack version not shown), and to use it you'll have to become familiar with the "Nodes" collection and the "Image List" control. The TreeView is a powerful control, but since it has to be populated programmatically, not many inexperienced developers use it. If your boss wants it, my guess is you're going to have to learn how to use it...[cry]

Thanks for all the info.

Normally i'd spend the next few days tearing through this, but unfortunately I am on a very tight schedule.

I went through and set up a test and I got it basically working when I had code data to it.

How do I get the data from the database to popluate this?

Code:
Private Sub Form_Load()

    'Build the Nodes for the TreeView Control
    With MyTreeView.Nodes
        'Parent node
        .Add , , "EQPARENT", "Equipment"
        'Child nodes
        .Add "EQPARENT", tvwChild, , "Equip Child 1"
        .Add "EQPARENT", tvwChild, , "Equip Child 2"

    End With

End Sub

I found this nice example, but all I did was confuse myself more.

Still not sure on how to grab the data and bind it.

Code:
Option Compare Database
Private Sub cmdCollapseNodes_Click()

    'Collapse all node
    For Each Node In MyTreeView.Nodes
        Node.Expanded = False
    Next

End Sub
Private Sub cmdExpandNodes_Click()

    'Expand all nodes
    For Each Node In MyTreeView.Nodes
        Node.Expanded = True
    Next

End Sub
Private Sub Form_Load()

' call sub to populate nodes
AddNodes

End Sub
Private Sub MyTreeView_Collapse(ByVal Node As Object)

' change node image to + if collapsing the node
' except were node is terminal i.e has no child node of it's own

If Node.Child = Null Then

That's quite some code Chuckh70, a little daunting though.

The first example you tried, is what you should work on.

You saw which "arguments" in the code, were displayed, & the heirarchy.

The idea, in your case(and in most cases , is to replace those values with recordset values.

rec.Open "SELECT DISTINCT txtCountry FROM tblCities", CurrentProject.Connection, adOpenDynamic, adLockOptimistic
rec2.Open "SELECT * FROM tblCities", CurrentProject.Connection, adOpenDynamic, adLockOptimistic

With Me.TreeView1
Do Until rec.EOF
strNode1txt = StrConv("Level1 - " & rec("txtCountry"), vbLowerCase)
strVistxt = rec("txtCountry")
Set nod = .Nodes.Add(Key:=strNode1txt, Text:=strVistxt)
nod.Expanded = False
rec.MoveNext
Loop

Do Until rec2.EOF
strNode1txt = StrConv("Level1 - " & rec2("txtCountry"), vbLowerCase)
strNode2txt = StrConv("Level2 - " & rec2("txtCountry") & " - " & rec2("txtCity"), vbLowerCase)
strVis2txt = rec2("txtCity")
.Nodes.Add relative:=strNode1txt, relationship:=tvwChild, Key:=strNode2txt, Text:=strVis2txt
rec2.MoveNext
Loop

You see where I use txtCountry, That's the Parent. I loop thru the table adding multiple parent nodes, for every country.
Then the child nodes, must first, have a record to match, (txtCountry again), then the city. Similiar to a Primary key/foreign key relationship. (yes, that particular table I used in my example, is not normalized well).

Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Populating the TreeView is normally only half the battle. The TreeView is typically married to a ListView, which displays the details associated with a node when it is selected. What are you planning to do with the TreeView?

I guess this issue has been resolved? Anyway, I wanted to point out one thing...the lengthy code sample posted is a good example of why we need to use consistent indentation and spacing, and intuitive variable naming to make our code easier to read. For example, compare the following:
Code:
Private Sub MyTreeView_Expand(ByVal Node As Object)

[green]' change node image to - if collapsing the node
' except were node is terminal i.e has no child node of it's own[/green]

If Node.Child = Null Then

    Node.Image = "img3"

Else

    Node.Image = "img2"

End If

End Sub

...with the same code:

Code:
[white]'[/white]

Private Sub MyTreeView_Expand(ByVal nodCurrent As Node)
  With nodCurrent
    If IsNull(.Child) Then
      .Image = "imgCollapsed"
    Else
      .Image = "imgExpanded"
    End If
  End With
End Sub

[white]'[/white]

Notice that the programmer in the first example declared the parameter incorrectly. If he would have used the second example he would have had intellisense support and his variable wouldn't have had an ambiguous name shared with the Node object. The second example doesn't need wordy comments either because it is self-explanatory.

If someone were to re-format the original code in this manner, it wouldn't be nearly as difficult to follow...[reading]

Maybe not resolved yet VBSlammer...
... it amazes me sometimes, that those who post the thread, do not request email notification.
...Who knows, maybe new to the site?

But, thanks for the tutoring. I'm finally after 2 years, beginning to appreciate the importance & discipline, behind formatting my code modules more intuitively. You definately underscored that fact!

..and Zameer, thanks for that very handy website!

Thanks for all of the help. Was out of town for a few day's but back working on this crazy thing. It atleast makes since now. I will post back with my results.
