Tree Walking Problems?

my outfit is a state agency...we are at the bottom of an incredibly large NDS tree spanning our entire state...i'm experiencing enormous problems that appear to related to tree walking that i've read about...

examples:

when using console1...i will drill through several layers of OU's til i get to our OU...i will then set that as root...i then have a dozen or so OU's that i manage under ours...each mouse click of those subsequent OU's takes 2 to 3 minutes to complete...

we run NDPS...users wait the same amount of time for their print dialog box to come after hitting their print button...

what in the world can i do...

Do you have a local partition of your OU?

i've got 2 5.x boxes...i is set as master...the other is read-write

Where are you running Console1 from? I mean have you installed it on your pc? If not, do so. It works better that way.
Are your printers in there own context or are they in the same as the users? Maybe both issues are actually the same one. It is trying to get the status of the printer and is having a problem.

Have you ran a DSrepair lately? Couldn't hurt.

printers are in the same context as the users

So.. the issue does seem to be related. If you click on the context, or when the user tries to print there is a delay.
Sorry, but we are not using NDPS so I can not help in troubleshooting that. But, I bet that is where your troubles lie.

Where is the NDPS manager in relation to the printers? Is it on a server up higher in the tree and across your WAN? or is it running on one of the local servers? Also wondering how the tree is partitioned from your level and down. I've seen some pretty bizarre replica strategies, and a bad replica/partition strategy can lead to slow tree performance.

Do your users experience slowness when logging in or accessing other resources on the network? What protocols are you running on your network? and through your WAN? What about accessing network volumes? is that slow? or mapping drives?

Are your printer agents configured with IP or IPX?

I'm just trying to gather more information here, not necessarily trying to blame anything in particular.
