Hello there,

I need to use images with transparent background on a radiant background to be printed out as a magazine.

Unfortunately the images are placed with a white background, I have tried the 0,1% trick on illustrator but it does not make any difference.
Even gif images have a white background.

Is there a way I get get a clean transparency in Illustrator?

Create a .psd with your fade and place it in AI.

If I didn't misunderstand you're suggesting to use gradient background around the pictures...

That wouldn't be possible because I have many pictures to use and the radiant color goes vertically from dark to light, and I still have to define the ultimate layout.

I thought there was a way something like 'no white areas' (as in QuarkXpress).

Are there other tips I can use to get a similar effect?

TIA

If you have Photoshop, you can use the Transparency Wizard in the Help menu to give your images transparency. You should save them as EPS files then place them in Illustrator and they should be transparent over your blends.

try creating clipping paths?

or use the clipping path to create a mask in Illustrator.

or try exporting from PS as a PNG. bringing that into AI

ahhh....that's all I got for you.

.psd format is cleaner, smaller, and more compatible with illustrator. Simply create your .psd with a transparent backround (so you can see the checkerboard) and save it as a .psd. Feel free to leave it unflattened but less the less layers the better. You may have trouble with some text layers in which case you should save a version for working and one for placeing. If you're placeing in AI 9 it will drop in just fine. If you are placing in AI 10 it will ask you what version of photoshop you would like to place it in (which is totally stupid imo). If you choose version 5 it will keep your transparant parts, if you choose version 6 it will give it a white backround. Like I said, pretty stupid, but, it works and it will be easier on your video card.

Thanks everybody,

But why on hearth they put such an important feature in the Help section?

I work in desktop for a printing company files saved as .psd with transparency on cause problems on most rips. Call your printing company to see how there rips handle files that use transparancy. It might eliminate a big problem on that rush job.

PNG32 will maintain transparency when placed in Illustrator.
