Transition 2003-2008 AD

Hello
Can someone tell me if I need to raise my Exchange 2003 functional level (now in Mixed mode) in order to successfully go through with transition procedure (adprep etc)?

Is there a specific order I should follow?
Domain, Forest, Exchange

Exchange 2003 will work fine in a Windows 2008 AD environment.
