I will be installing a POS system on a Virtual Machine temporarily. The POS system will be installed on windows server 2012 standard and also require Microsoft sql. When we get our new server which could be 6 months from now, would i be able transfer the Microsoft Licenses to that machine or will i have to purchase new licenses ?

Are you referring to the SQL License or Server 2012 Standard License or the POS License key or all of the above?

Providing your licenses are not OEM, you should be able to transfer. You are entitled to deploy 2 VM machines on a single Windows Server 2012 host, but you can have only once instance of SQL on VM or the host.
