Hello All! I am trying to connect my laptop to my pc via data cables. I tried setting up a network to tranfer but to no avail. I am running Windows XP on both pc and laptop.

THis is what I used...
Direct Cable Connection can be accessed via Start - Program Files - Accessories - Communications. If you are using DCC for the first time, you might need to tweak around with some of the settings.

On starting DCC click on Change. Since you shall be using your desktop as a Host, select it and click Next. Plug in your serial/parallel cable and choose the appropriate port. Click Next and enter a password if you wish to enable security. Use the same configuration for your laptop (or the second PC), except that it should be configured as a guest.

What am I doing wrong?
Thanks In Advance!!

ReLiVaNt,

I would prefer to assist you in establishing the networking that is built into XP.

I assume that you have ethernet capability on both, and that you ran the setup wizard.

If you do not have a hub, switch or router for connecting them both to you can connect them to each other.

One caveat when doing this is that you need a cross-over ethernet cable. A normal cable will not allow communication. Cross over cables are readily available and I would mark it profusely that it is a cross-over type is it is not already maked as such.

Maybe this will help even though it does not directly address your post.

I would suggest you go out and buy an in expensive switch or hub (4 port, less than $20. Look on line at newegg.com, etc).

This way if you need to transfer files to more than one pc, you can do so. Uses regular network cables.

Not sure about the need for the switch as ReLiVaNt only wants to connect his laptop and desktop together but for under $20 I would certainly recommend a PCI network card (for the desktop) and a crossover cable for connection, this setup is far superior in every way to the one you are trying.

I thouroughly agree with using a crossover cable betwixt the two NICs. One thing to check if the computers cannot "see" each other, make sure the firewall config isn't preventing connectivity. If you installed SP2, the firewall is turned on by default even if you previously had it turned off.

You also want to be sure that you are not using DHCP. Without a DHCP server, neither of your PCs will have IP Addresses, and they won't be able to talk to each other.

Just be sure that "obtain IP address automatically" (or whatever it says--I'm on my Linux box), is not marked.
