I had a 11 GB partition for my domain users. And now it is almost full and I want to transfer these folders to another 17GB HDD.

I want to know is there any method that I can copy all the folders with there share name and securety as it to another disk in same server?

Any help will highly appreciated

HI!

There are several ways.

The best (FMHO) is to restore to the new drive from your tape backup, and switch drive letters between the old and the new data drives.
One important advantage is that your testing your backup the same time.

Another way is to use SCOPY - this is a tool from the resource kit to copy files with their permissions between 2 NTFS partitions.
You will also have to switch drive letters like the first solution.
This is because NTFS permissions are part of the file system (stored on disk like file-names, etc) but SHARE permissions are stored in the REGISTRY using drive letters.

There are also good 3rd party products like Norton Ghost that can do the job.

A good idea will be to take the old 11gb drive out and place it as an offline backup somewhere, instead of format and re-use.
If the drive also contains other partitions still needed, then just remove the drive letter from it and leave it like that in the server.

I've done exactly this with Norton Ghost PE. I used to use Powerquest Drivecopy but they require you to use a new version of their software that supports Windows 2K Server which is very expensive. Powerquest's partition magic is also useful to extend existing NTFS partitions.

Hope this helps!
