I want to transfer data and programs from my old computer (Win ME) to my new computer (Win XP). I have about 6 gigs of music alone plus various other data and programs.
Is there an easy way to do this without having to load every program one by one? I am going from a 40GB to a 60GB and have a cd burner on both computers.

Thankful for any tips
Greg

5 minute job to remove the hard drive from the ME machine, piggy back as slave to the new machine then transfer files in windows Explorer.
Just make sure your first boot device in bios is set to IDE 0 to avoid confusing the PC.

Just to clarify.. You can transfer files, docs, pics etc but NOT programs.. Those you MUST install !!!

I have 2 PCs that I transfer files between regularly. One is a laptop that I carry to the office and the other is a desktop PC that I use when working from home.

I have a NIC network card in each machine with a crossover cable between the two. One PC has a TCP/IP address of 192.168.0.1 and the other is 192.168.0.2. I then set up sharing of the drives on both PCs and I can tranfer files between them at a very fast rate.

NIC cards are available in the UK for £9.

I can also recommend the FileSync program....

Be careful, some of your programs may not all work on the XP machine if it has been formatted with NTFS. You will need to be sure they will work with XP. I agree with lewisp if you have a nic in both pc get a crossover cable and hook them up as a network, thenjust bring your files over to the new pc. If you dont have a nic in each, paparazi is also correct, it is pretty easy to install the old hard drive on the new computer as a second hard drive. You just need to set the jumper to slave then the old hdd will show up as a D drive. Then you can copy everything to where you want it.

Thanks for all your advice, my new Dell is in the mail and I will get back on how it goes.
