Hi! I have 2 laptop computers, 1 with win98 and the other with winxp home. I want to transfer some of the data from the win98 computer to the winxp computer. What is the easiest way to do this? Can I use a parallel cable and, if so, what program is used to set to the transfer? Please help!
Thank you in advance for any of your helpful suggestions.

Well, the network cabling would be helpful if you had 2 PCMCIA NIC cards - or network cards in the laptop.

If you don't, you can get a laplink that uses parallel drives - but if you don't have it, you may want to invest in a couple of PCMCIA NIC cards and get a crossover cable.

Network cables will be faster for transferring info too.

All comes down to cost in my opinion. If you're going to buy something to do this, why not invest in a USB External ZIP 250 drive? (make sure the win98 laptop has a port) that way you can transfer to a disk, hook it into the other, dump it down, etc... PLUS you will have a way to back up files in the future. -= Beer is food! You could use a parallel cable if both laptops have a parallel port. You would need to buy a Male-to-Male parallel cable to connect the laptops, then use "Direct Cable Connection" (DCC) which is built into Windows. You can also invest in a USB Direct Connection Cable which I'd recommend for faster file transfers (up to 45MB per minute or 12 times faster than parallel).

DCC is usually located under "Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools" in Win98, and I'm not sure where in XP. If it's not there in Win98, you can go to "Start->Settings->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs" then click on the Windows Setup tab. There you can double-click Communications and add DCC.

For a complete set of instructions, including XP, go here:

- USB direct cables are more expensive than parallel ones
