Hi, anyone help with this. I have acquired the following information:

pc1.yarm-5-cust95.pete.cable.ntl.com

Is this an actual host address? Or is there any way of tracking it down further. I realise I can get in touch with the hostmaster@ntl.com. But I wanted to see if it's possible to track any further before doing that.

Cheers, Steve.

Howdy:

There are a multitude of free and shareware tracking/tracing programs out there. Just do a google or dogpile search for "email tracing".

It isn't a URL, but it seems to be a full host name, including the domain name. I don't think there is much you can do with it.

The best way to trace is by using the information from the mail headers (assuming that you have received email from the person). The originating IP is the best way to do this. An email address is even sufficient to trace.

You can't do that much with what you have got.

Don't forget that the email addres is easily forged! Look at the headers for the originating mail server.

Chris.

I have looked for utilities on the web, and they are rubbish. They do no more than nslookup or tracert do, so no use there.
The information I posted, i.e what appears to be a host, was acquired by going through the email header. I do have email addresses and an ip address which I resolved to the information that I posted. As you say its all too easy to forge the email address and it would appear that this person has tried to cover their tracks.

I have contacted the hostmaster at the isp concerned, in the hope that they can help me. However, I expect due to data protection and privacy laws, I won't get very far, without getting the authorities involved.

Thanks for your comments.

Steve.
