Hi
I am connected to internet through a WIFI router (WRT54G-V5 linksys).
When i make a tracert the first line is not my WIFI router as expected but always the destination test.
An example
My router is : 192.168.1.100

If i do tracert 62.4.5.6 (just an example)
I have :
1 1ms 1ms 1ms 62.5.6.6
2 ....

Where i SHOULD have
1 1ms 1ms 1ms 192.168.1.100
2 ....

Seems that the identification returns by the router is not the correct one.

If i use spam spade to make the trace route, same result.

Can you help ?

Start / Run / cmd

At the command line type:-

ipconfig

then press return:- should bring up something like the following

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : ecid.cig.mot.com
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Look at the IP address, if you have something like 192.168.xxx.xxx or 10.xxx.xxx.xxx or 172.xxx.xxx.xxx they are private.

Ok
I already did that.

My ip address is 192.168.1.100
My subnet mask is 255.255.0.0
My gateway is 192.168.1.1

so all is ok for me.

Note that changing the PC i have EXACTLY the same pb.
So perhaps the problem is more on the router ...

Thanks

Unless I missed something, your subnet mask SHOULD be 255.255.255.0

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Also you claim your Router is 192.168.1.100, but your PC lists its gateway as 192.168.1.1

This is almost assuredly wrong, the PC gateway should be the router's IP address.

Hi

For subnet mask not sure. I tell it from memory.
I am not in my home now. I verify tonight and post.

For ip address excuse me for my first example.
192.168.1.1 is the address of my router and 192.168.1.100 is my pc address.
So all is ok here.

Hi again
The mask is 255.255.255.0
You were right

The first hop you are seeing of 62.4.5.6 must be the outside address of you WRT54g. The linksys is report this back. This is completely normal for a broadband router becasue the whole device is the first hope which can be reported back as either the inside (192.168) or outside (62.4.5.6) address.

No 62.4... is NOT the outside address of my router.
The router belongs to a private WIFI router.
Its address is 192.168.1.1
And that is sure

Another point is that if i tracerouter another address, the first line always display the destination.
For example if i did :
TRACERT 1.1.1.1 (that is just an example)

I have :
1. 1ms 1ms 1ms 1.1.1.1

Can you copy and paste a tracert to Also, your router HAS to have an outside WAN public IP---you could not get on the internet without it. Also, are you wireless to the router, or ethernet cabled to it?

The inside address of your router is 192.168.1.1, before it NATs to the outside world. After it does, it translates the inside address of 192.168.1.100 (your computer) to the outside global address (the address of the outside, or internet, interface). What WAN technology are you using? DSL? If so, then connect the DSL modem and do the trace.

Please post a trace to

Hi
To explain my network is not so easy.
I am not an expert.

My home is too far from an ADSL router so i am connected to a network build by a local company that use a WIFI network composed by WIFI repeaters.

But the pb is not the network topology because i am the only one on the network with this pb with tracert. So must come from my pc or my local router.

Here are the tracert to google :
