hi:
The problem is that:
How do I find a machine I tracerouted is a
NON-EXISTANT machine or is just running down(not responding)?
Is there a way when I looked at the packets to see any difference between them?

thanks

hi,

not really, if the machine is in the dns (so it has a name - like say) then ping will return 'bad ip address' but if all you have is a number then there is no way to tell the difference between a non-existent host and on that is turned off.

Thanks, but when dns server return "bad ip address",
it means the machine with the name doesn't exist in the dns.
Suppose the machine with is down, then I tracert return the same information as if I traced an ip that does not exist.

Is there any way to determin the difference

Thanks

Experiment, try it your self and look at the results.
