Someone recently gained access to a friends's hotmail account by answering his secret question. They then sent some very dodgy messages.

Is it possible to find out where it was sent from. Perhaps by getting an IP address and searching using it? If so, how?

The best you are going to be able to do is to trace it back to the ISP. If you have the message look at the e-mail headers and they will tell you from what ISP the perpetrator logged on through and into Hotmail.
