I'm passing a number from a subreport to a main report, and it's displaying correctly - however I now want to be able to do group totals using that returned value! It won't let me create a running total using the formula field and the usual summary/totals options are greyed out!

Any ideas?

Unfortunately EmmaL you will not be able to do this in Crystal and there's no neat fix either.

Crystal has three phases of operation:

1. BeforeReadingRecords,
2. WhileReadingRecords and
3. WhilePrintingRecords

SubReports are run at stage 3 while groupings are calculated at phase 2. At the time groups are calculated Crystal will not know the results of the subreports.

Note: This is shown in the Crystal help if you type "pass, multi-pass reporting flow charts" as a keyword on the index tab (CRv8)

As you cannot produce this report from Crystal alone you will need to look at alternatives.

You can run totals that include values captured from subreports if you use the 3 formula technique to create your runnig totals. Use the 3-Formula technique described in faq149-182. Ken Hamady, On-site Custom Crystal Reports Training & Consulting
