Total number of pages always equals current page number?! 1

In my footers I have always used the fields for page number and number of pages to have a running footer that includes "Page 3 of 12".."Page 4 of 12"...pretty standard stuff.

But I have this one document where the total number of pages is always equal to the current page number:
"Page 3 of 3".."Page 4 of 4".

There are no sections in the doc. I have tried a variety of things and finally resorted to just using typing in the total number of pages. Of course, then when the number of pages changes, the document is out of whack.

Has anyone ever seen this problem before and/or have any suggestions how to fix this problem?

Thanks

Hi,

Are you SURE that you are using the [number of pages] field?

Yes, I am sure that I am using the correct field -- the page numbering looks correct on the screen ie. page 3 of 12 but prints as page 3 of 3.

That las link looks promising, first by doing the update. I'm at a company so I don't have the disks personally but I'll have to see if I can dig them up.

Other possible workarounds (which may or may not work) include switching back & forth between print preview & back several times; printing in reverse order; turning off background printing; hiding nonprintable characters.

I found that using the "Number of Pages" button on the footnote toolbar does NOT work but that inserting a field from the menu (Insert>Field>NumPages) does. Go figure.

Thanks!

Dinobrago,

I've had this problem and fixed it with an MS Office update. I can't remember if it was Service pack 1 or above. Keep in mind, while applying the update you will be prompted for the Office installation disk.

Thanks. Since my previous reply, I did find the disks and applied all the updates and things work fine now. Thanks for your input.

What if the installation is already fully patched in Office2000 and it doesn't work? Yes, I read the MVP article...but the user may not want to do any of those things.
