I'm trying to get on to a 2600 router and everytime I have accesses it we go from a serial adapter to a cable that appears to be ethernet to another serial adapter to a serial/usb adapter to my laptop (since the laptop has no built in serial cable). Is there any way to just use the NIC to the ethernet cable for communication? If so how do I configure this?

If your router and laptop have IP addresses in the same network, then yes. Just connect them via crossover cable or through a hub and telnet to the router.

That's ofcourse only if the telnet protocol is allowed on the router for access.

Hello, the cable is not ethernet it is a serial cable with RJ-45 connectors. You won't be able to connect from a NIC on the computer to that cable.

i dont understand why you are going through many cables, but a console cable will connect you to set chnanges, like allowing telnet and other settings.
again a crossover cabl should serve in this case.

Thanks all!!

Now I just need to get into the thing and modify the access-list.

I am actually working on an "extra" router trying to learn this stuff. I do have an actual router that I will need to modify the access-list on but until I am comfortable with this test router I am staying off the in-use router.

Can anyone recommend a good book on configuring these routers. I am brand new to the Cisco world but it looks like my job responsibilty will now include this so I need to learn as much as I can quickly.
