How do you display names as opposed to IP addresses on the Display View map under the Toploogy Service? My Cisco devices are listed by name in the other parts of the server, but when the map is generated, it uses IP address for the displayed label.

I am having the exact OPPOSITE problem. I can name my devices on the map, you have to have your SYSTEM NAME set. I need to know how to Set my names in the device listing... Any help is greatly appreciated

I think this might be a DNS/name resolution issue.
First Check that NAme resolution is working from the command line of the server either nslookup or even ping by the name if you get anything that looks like the server cannot resolve the name you have several ways to fix it. If you use DNS then make sure the server is configured to use the correct DNS server (in Network config in NT) If you have no DNS or the devices are not in a DNS the you can create a hosts file ( \WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts note no extension and beware the files already in the dir do have extensions) and check that name resolution works.

Second Check that in ANI Server-->Setup-->Discovery Settings you have use reverse DNS lookup checked.

Rediscovey is reccomended after 1 &/or 2 above

Third (after Discovery has compleated) Check the RME-->Administration-->Inventory--> Import Status For any Aliases
And pick the option that resolves the issue. probably Use discovered devices but read the explanation on the screen to check which option you require.

I don't think the problem is a DNS problem. You have the names in other parts of the system. There are two things you can do.

1) From the map view, go to EDIT -> MAP PREFERENCES. Then go to FALLBACK RULE. This is a menu that allows you to set the order in which device labels appear in network topology views. If you want to change the order permanently, make sure you EDIT DEFAULTS, pick the order you want, and check APPLY, OK, and then OK again.

2) If you ever want to change the view to something else while your looking at the map, (ie.IP to DNS Name), from the map go to VIEW -> DISPLAY LABELS, and then pick the display you want to see. (IP, DNS or Sysname). You can also CLEAR LABELS from here which lets you look at an uncluttered map with NO labels. Hope this helps.
