I just assembled a new system, and it seems to randomly reboot itself without warning. I installed two 512mb of ram. Removing one of the cartridges seems to correct the problem. The mobo spec says it can handle up to 3 gigs. Is there something else that could be making it so unstable? I would like to use both sticks of ram.

System:
Mobo Asus A7N8X
Video #1 MSI Ti4200 128Mb AGP
Video #2 Pine Tech. TNT M64 32Mb PCI
Chip AMD 2100+ T-bred
RAM two 512 Mb DDR333 pc-2700 Kingston
Windows XP

I would go out to Asus's site and upgrade the BIOS by flashing it to the latest revision. From the notes, it seems they've made some improvements over the past month with memory compatibilities.

Are both Kingston sticks exactly identical (model number and appearance)? Have you tried both by themselves in the first DIMM slot, to make sure they're both legit?

It might just be that one of the sticks are faulty or not 100% compatible with your motherboard. Hopefully the BIOS upgrade helps...

Sorry got no answers for you but can say I am having the same problem with the same motherboard, boot loops set at anything above 100fsb replaced everything for other new components apart from the motherboard itself (benefit of working in a custom build shop)I thought I was using the ultimate socket "A" motherboard, seems I'm squeezing a lemon instead.
Enermax PSU

Oh! other error messages: your bios isn't ACPI compatible and file missing win32.
Multiple clean installs and as I say everything swopped at least once for brand new (apart from Moby)
Good these Nforce2 motherboards! lol

Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

I already updated the bios, and I have tried both sticks solo with similar stability.

Thanks, any other thoughts?

I have a suggestion that may help.

If you are using Win 2000, there is a setting in "\my computer\properties
\advanced\Startup and recovery" that makes Windows reboot on any system failure. Uncheck the box next to "automaticlly reboot". This probably won't solve your problem by itself, but it may give you a better opportunity to see what is really going on.
