I just ordered a Progressive 701K kit from my dad's work
I have heard/read that you cant tone Cat5 cable. I asked a tech at my dad's office about this and he said you can, but the tone has to be on one specific pair , it wont work through the jacket like on cat 3. Any other suggestions on how I can get tone through cat5 cable? jeff moss

Daron,

I've done it many times. I agree with you though, it shouldn't.

there are new toners that will tone over a cable even if it is plugged into a hub. Another new toner is available that makes the link light on the hub flash.

Ive never had a problem toning a cat5 wire(UTP),whether connected to eqiupment or not,and a new battery sure makes a difference. However, toning a shielded Cat5 is another story. You cant trace by running your probe across the jacket. It will need to be done directly to the copper connection.

2 things.
1-I got the JS Popper clips today, cut the old clips and attached the JS Poppers. They are nice clips, but I am not sure if I attached them right. There was a nut and a screw, I couldnt get the wire under the nut and put it under the screw instead. It works, but is that okay? My friend is going to get me some spade lugs from his dad so I can try to re-do the connections.
2-I also did some experiments with toning through cat 5 cable. I scraped some paint off of my metal workbench, attached one lead to that and the other lead to a cat5 cable I made, and the tone was much louder. jeff moss
