Does any one know where the best and cheapest place to get XP is? Thanks lmwtech

surely some one can point me to a good place to buy xp!

I suggest you go to Delaware because there is no sales tax there.

You should be able to find XP Pro OEM for around $125-$140. If you find it for much less than $125, chances are it is pirate.

While I think you said that tongue-in-cheek, just thought I'd point out that if you buy something in another state, then bring it back to Ohio, you still have to pay taxes on it here.

what if you bought it in delaware, made an image of the cd, and then e-mailed it to yourself, and then retrieved it in wherever...

of course you'd need a pretty BIG e-mail account and connection :)

Of course it was said tongue in cheek.

I am very concerned about *mistakenly* purchasing pirated software. I get at least 5 emails every day to purchase low cost software. I was even duped in to buying XP Pro for $50 one time. It was a pirated copy.

Now I only buy software from reputable vendors. Sure, I probably pay more, but I also sleep better at night knowing that I am not promoting software piracy.

LloydSev, I am not as familiar with state laws as you are. If you purchase a copy of XP from Best Buy in Pennsylvania (paying the sales tax), must you also pay the sales tax again in Ohio? This doesn't seem right to me, but then again, I am rarely surprised where taxes are involved.

Hi,
In general, as I understand it, the State where you purchase a product is where the tax is imposed/paid..For mail order, the company may need to have some 'presence' in your State in order 'trigger' a sales tax collection requirement..In most cases, however, it is the merchant's responsibility to collect any legally required taxes..
As is the case in all legal issues, talk to a lawyer or someone in your state's revenue office for definitive word.

Precisely.
You don't get taxed twice for the same item.
It's a "sales tax" not an state-level import tariff.

Tired of waiting for an answer? Try asking better questions. See: faq222-2244

Most states now have a "Use Tax" that is collected on the income tax returns (if your state has that) for collecting sales tax on items purchased from a retailer who doesn't collect sales tax - usually online retailers.

At the moment - its strictly honor system as to submitting any amounts to the Use Tax.

Ah...I see.
No state income tax here, fortunately.

And currently states cannot charge sales taxes on internet purchases by Federal Law.

I should note the exception: unless the retailer maintains a brick and morter presence in the State.

The original question was, "Does any one know where the best and cheapest place to get XP is?".

I have a followup question. When purchasing software on-line, how can you be sure you're getting a real/licensed copy of the software. lmwtech suggests that XP Pro should cost between $125 and $140. That does not guarantee that the software is not pirated. Other than purchasing software from big retailers (Best Buy, Comp USA, etc...) how can you be sure to get a legal version?

Thanks bcastner, but it doesn't really help. According to Microsoft's website, "Unfortunately, if we find that your software is not genuine, we won't be able to return it to you or provide you with a refund or other compensation."

When you purchase software on-line, you pay for it, then it shows up in the mail. THEN you can determine if it's pirated. In my opinion, it's too late. I've spent the money already.

Hi,
That means, like any other business deal, that you should know who you are dealing with..
Saving a few $ to get a possible unusable product is false economy..Go with the big guys..

Why dont we get to the root of this issue..

why do you need a copy of xp.. what are you running now.. or is this a home built?

In Ohio, you still must pay any sales taxes that were not collected at the purchase.. Say you have a product in county A, which has a sales tax of 4%, but you went to County B which has a sales tax of 3%. You may have only paid the 3%, but you are required on your tax forms to indicate this, and pay the remaining 1% to the county that you did not originally pay.

It's to keep people from purposefully buying merchandise in another area to avoid being taxed.
